Labrador et Terre-Neuve nous sommes en chemin
Labrador and Newfoundland here we come
We are really at the tail end of our arctic trip. Signs of the white mans ways are popping up more and more. Different traditions but it is still a journey of discovery. Our last stops in Innu territory are Resolute Bay(Qausuittuq), Iqualuit et Kuujjuaq. We still are witness to the beauty of the people and the culture. My new Innu friend Mike has warned me that we are in for a great cultural discovery. Something very typical of the Innu of Nunavut and Northern Quebec. What we are treaty to is an amazing display of the fabulous throat signing. The katajjaq, as it is called in Innu, is a very old tradition that can also be found in Mongolia and Tibet. It once was a form of dueling between women to see which one would falter first. It is now an art-form that very few women now master. Now a days it is an superb spectacle, a bizarre one of sorts. We were amazed by the performances we witnessed in a three celebrations. Vera and Dora gave me a crash course on how to go about it but it is a very bad art-form when an MC wants to preserve his voice...It can be a bit tedious on the vocal cords! Then it was back to the private jet direction Gaspé and Sept-iles on Québec soil. I must admit that it was a bit comforting to here a big SALUT as we stepped into the high-school in Gaspé. It was a little chicken soup for the soul! Don't get me wrong I've enjoyed every moment of this arctic portion of our journey but I've felt like I've been in another country for the last week. Anyway, the Celebration in Gaspé was like a Rock concert! Hundreds of screaming kids in the gymnasium of the local high-school partying like if it was Saint-Jean Baptist day! How beautiful the people and this region are. Tons of thanks and hugs thanking us for this fantastic day. For those who predicted Quebec would not get into the Relay Celebrations...You wrong!!! When we got to Sept-iles it was great to see a bunch of familiar faces! Off to Labrador and Newfoundland. Get out the fiddles and the accordions it's time to jig!
