Northern Alberta-Saskatchewan and Manitoba/Le Nord de Manitoba-Saskatchewan et Alberta

C'est fort différent de ce que nous avons vécu dernièrement.  Nous sommes de retour chez l'homme blanc.  Toutefois, le nord des provinces centrales est bondés de gens très fiers de leur pays malgré des passages à vides.  La Flamme fait ressortir le meilleur des gens.  C'est incroyable de voir le visages des jeunes et des moins jeunes a l'approche de celle-ci.  Puis, lorsque la Flamme fait son entrée c'est l'euphorie !  Lors de notre passage a Cold Lake nous étions comme des Rock Stars, des jeunes femmes en délire criaient à toutes les phrases que nous prononcions.  C'était surréaliste!  Ah!  Cette Flamme!

Well this is quite different then what we have grown accustomed to int the arctic.  We are back into white mans land.  However, the central provinces are blessed with people who despite the hardships of the last year are full of pride!  How the Flame brings out the best in people.  It's incredible to see the face of the young and old as it gets nearer to the celebrations.  Once it makes its way onto stage it is a state of Euphoria!  When we were in Cold Lake the front row was filled with young teenage girls who kept screaming like fans at a Beatles concert every time we spoke a sentence!  It was unreal!  I tell that Flame!

Bonsoir Tous,
Je suis de retour en ligne.  Nos contrées lointaines ne m'ont pas permis d'afficher de nouvelles sur le blogue les derniers jours.  Me ne vous inquiétez pas d'ici 48hrs je vous afficherai les derniers détails du périples.  Aujourd'hui une petite incursion en sol québecois avec des arrêts a Kuujuuaq, Gaspé et Sept-Iles.  Merci a Katy, Roger, Manon et les enfants de s'être déplacés ce soir.  De retour sur la route a Terre-Neuve et Labrador demain.  J'espère que tout le monde va bien et je m'ennuis de vous!

Back on-line!  The remote areas have not been friendly to our internet connections.  Hence, the lack of action on my blog.  However, don't worry in 48hres I will bring you all up to speed!  Today a litte day trip into Québec with stops in Kuujuuaq, Gaspé and Sept-Iles.  Thanks to Katy, Manon, Roger and the kids for coming out tonight to say hello!  On the road again tomorrow and into Newfoundland and Labrador.  Hope everyone is doing well and I miss you all!

Jour/Day 7 Dawson City/Inuvik-Jou-Day 8 Kugluktuk/Yellowknife

Alors nous voici dans l'arctique.  Quelle expérience d'humilité!  Quelle expérience de découverte!  Plus nous approchons du cercle polaire plus le paysage devient aride mais plus la beauté des gens est frappante.  Pas tant leurs beauté physique que leurs traditions, culture, histoire et que dire leur sourire magnétique comme le pôle.  Leur joie de vivre et leur camaraderie sont des exemples que nous devrions tous suivre.  Les enfants viennent vers nous et nous demande sans réserve et d'une voix munie d'une confiance inébranlable "Hey c'est quoi ton nom".  Puis que dire des adultes qui viennent s'asseoir à nos cotés et nous parle comme si nous étions copains depuis des lunes.  Puis les vieux sages qui souvent ne parlent pas notre langue mais qui nous lance un sourire qui nous agrippe et nous lâche uniquement que lorsque leur attention est détourné!  Je suis bien "groundé" depuis que je suis ici, il y a quelque chose de spirituel et de magique.  L'effet que provoque la Flamme Olympique pour les gens ici est indescriptible.  Je n'ai jamais vu des gens être si fier d'être présent et Canadiens.  Les larmes de joie coules a flots et l'unifolié est partout.  A Inuvik notre dernier porteur de flambeau était un homme de 64 ans qui est un héros dans sa communauté pour son implication avec les jeunes et champion du saut a la couverte et a Kugluktuk c'est un Paralympien non-voyants avec tout le village l'a accompagnée jusqu'à la vasque en chantant!! Frissons! Comme j'ai dit a mon nouveau copain Innu, Michael, vous n'êtes plus qu'une page du National Geographic ou d'un documentaire, vous êtes ma réalité maintenant. Ce n'est plus de la fiction, c'est la réalité en chair et en os! Mon univers vient de prendre de l'expansion et mon pays brille un peu plus!  Mon coeur déborde de gratitude!

Well we are here in the hight arctic above the arctic circle.  What a humbling experience!  What an eye opener! The closer we get to the arctic circle, the more barren the land becomes but greater the beauty of the people becomes.  Not the physical beauty specifically but their traditions, their culture, their history and what can be said of their magnetic smile that captures us stronger then the magnetic north.   Their camaraderie and their joie de vivre are examples we should all follow.  The kids walk straight up to you and with no reservation and ask you with a disconcerting confidence "hey what's your name?" And the adults you come and sit next to you and start a conversation as if you were an old friend and the elders who often don't speak our language mesmerise you with their smile and do not let you go until their attention is drawn somewhere else.  I'm feeling grounded like I have not been for a long time.  Their is something spiritual and magical about this place.  The Flame brings out something particular in these people.  It is hard to explain.  I've never seen people be so proud to be living in the moment and to be Canadian.  Tears of joy are everywhere and the maple leaf flies high! In Inuvik our final Torchbearer was a 64 year young community role model and 17 years running blanket toss champion.  In Kugluktuk it was a blind Paralympian with all the children of the community walking behind to the foot of the cauldron singing all the way! GOOSE BUMPS!  As I said to my new Innu buddy Michael, "you are no longer a page out of a National Geographic or a face in a documentary, you are my reality now!  This is not fiction anymore, this is reality in flesh and bones.  My universe has now expanded and my country shines even brighter!  My heart is filled with gratitude.

Courtenay-Campbell River jour-day 4

Dernière journée sur l'Ile de Vancouver.  Quelle journée!  Deux spectacles extraordinaires.  Nous avons rencontré a Courtenay une dame qui a vécu les Jeux de 1936 à Berlin.  Spécial pour nous, pourquoi?  Car le retour du Relais de la Flamme dans l'ère moderne a débuté à ces Jeux.  Elle était toute émue du cadeaux d'une torche que nous lui avons remis.  Le soir a Campbell River nous avons atteint un sommet d'énergie de foule 3000 personnes se sont retrouvés dans un aire de stationnement après une journée d'arts, spectacles et même une parade pour célébrer le passage de la Flamme dans cette municipalité de l'ile de Vancouver.  Nous avons été accueillis en fin de spectacle par des jeunes dans la foule comme des Rocks Stars.  Photos, autographes...C'étais spéciale!  Demain départ pour la portion du Grand Nord!  Le voyage continue.

Last day on Vancouver Island.  What a day with two superb shows!  In the morning we met a lovely lady who witnessed the 1936 Berlin Games as a child.  Special for us, why you ask?  Well those were also the Games that brought back to Torch Relay to modern Olympics.  She was very moved by our gift of a Torch.  In the evening in Campbell River we hit a peak in crowd enthusiasm!  3000  fans came out energised culminated their day of arts, shows and a parade with our evening celebration.  After the show kids were looking to take pictures and get our autographs.  One local representative told me it had been a hard year and the celebration was a beacon of hope for many!  Tomorrow we leave for the Arctic leg of our Relay!  As continues the adventure

Duncan and Nanaimo jour/day 2

Salut Tous


Merci à ceux qui se joigne a ce Blogue! Désolé parfois pour la grammaire mais souvent ces textes sont rédigés tard le soir voir tôt le matin! Bref, la première journée sur la route en fut toute une! Mais on y est arrivé, deux spectacles qui ont livré la marchandise. Ce matin nous étions du coté de Duncan, la ville du plus grand bâton et rondelle de hockey au monde! Les gens furent très touchés par le spectacle et évidemment le clou de la célébration c'est toujours l'arrivée de la flamme pour un des héros de la place. Aujourd'hui c'était au tour de Richard Peter, médaillée en basketball en fauteuil roulant. De plus, nous avons reçu la visite du premier ministre Campbell. Il devient un grand fan de notre célébration :-) En soirée nous avons passé du coté de Nanaimo et quel spectacle! Il y avait environ 12000 personnes survoltées en cette soirée d'Halloween. Des enfants en déguisements et des adultes aussi, belle soirée de fêtes. De plus, j'ai eu le grand plaisir de co-animer le spectacle avec la chef d'antenne de CTV et un des visages des Jeux lors de la diffusions, Pamela Martin. Superbe femme et très sympathique. Une autre femme extraordinaire que nous avons eu le privilège c'est Michel Stilwel la porteuse du flambeau de la communauté. Nous avons même eu droit a un superbe feu d'artifice!

Hello All and welcome to this Blog!  Sorry for the sometimes poor grammar but often these texts are written late at night or real early in the morning!  This morning we were in Duncan for our first show on the road and what a first show and first day it was!  Duncan is the home of the biggest hockey stick and puck in the world!  The high point of todays show was definitely the arrival of the Flame.  People are always awestruck at this moment.  That is a good thing for it is the reason we are doing this.  It's just great to see the faces of the kids.  Oh! how I understand what they are feeling.  Todays community Torchbearer was Richard Peter a Paralympic wheelchair basketball player and multiple medal winner.  Premier Campbell was out again at our event, I think he's becoming somewhat of a groupie hahaha!  This evening we brought our long day to a close by celebrating with a crowd estimated at 12000 ghouls and goblins ! I had the great pleasure to co-emcee this evening with Pamela Martin from CTV.  She will the face and one of the voices for the Olympics  What a superb and nice person.  Another superb woman was our Torchbearer Michell Stillwell a wheelchair track Paralympian. The evening came to a close with a great fireworks display!
